Reflection Questions
1. What does symmetry mean?
Symmetry means something is equally balanced. For example, you can visually or physically fold it in half & everything that is on one side is on the other side as well. Close your eyes and imagine a circle; a perfect circle. Fold that circle in half. See how it becomes a semi circle and you can't see the other half. That is symmetrical.
2. Provide and example of where in nature you can find symmetry. Why are objects symmetrical, what would be a benefit to being balanced/symmetrical as a human?
A butterfly can be symmetrical. As humans it is good to be symmetrical because if not you can have back problems if you have a shorter leg than the other for instance.
3. Describe the process of creating a rectangular prism/cube. What did you do to plan prior to construction.
I created a blue print with the dimensions which were, 3 rectangles that were 3in by 6in & 2 square/rectangles that were 3in by 2.5in. to create my rectangular prism base. I also planned out how big my tree was going to be and what style did I want to use.
4. What style of bonsai tree did you choose, and why did you pick that style?
For my tree, I chose the semi cascade bonsai because for me, the tree depicts me. You see a semi cascade tree stays half up and half down; never does it go farther than the base. I stopped trying in life at some point to do something halfway but I did not completely stopped doing something at all to the point where I wasn't trying anymore. Therefore I am the tree.
5. How would someone know which style of bonsai tree you created? What characteristics illustrate which type of tree style you created?
My bonsai tree is obvious to tell because of the way my tree falls down on the side. It doesn't go fully down, it stays at the level of where the base is at.
6. The media/materials that were used were: wire, cardboard, paper mach e, tissue paper, paint, and scrap paper. Out of all the materials that were worked with, which one was the most challenging for you to work with. Why did you find that material more challenging than the others?
The paper mach e part was the hardest one for me because the paper wouldn't collaborate with me. It kept getting stuck on my fingers & it wouldn't want to stuck to where I needed it to.
7. How does your bonsai tree reflect personal choices that made, and what makes your project unique to you?
It was unique to me because that week that we were studying about the bonsai trees in VPA I became very depressed and stressed because of problems life decided to throw at me. I didn't fully give up on trying to get those problems over with but I wasn't determined to do it either. I was just not shining as bright as my usual self. I pictured the tree as myself. It resembled myself under my eyes. For example, the tree is a semi cascade. It falls down but not to the ground it stays halfway there at the base line. Just like how I didn't completely give up in the war zone either. I stayed half in half out.
