Murder Mystery
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
The standards for this assignment were 8.G.7 which was to use proof to explain the Pythagorean Theorem. To prove the Pythagorean Theorem I had to create triangles and see which one gave in with the information I was given. The project was a crime scene project. There were three towers in the crime scene & three suspects. The first suspect was on the Sears tower, second on Sony, & third on Trump Towers. We had to draw a triangle from the suspect to the murdered body on the floor. We had to use the formula a^2+b^2=c^2. That was my proof. My mathematical work was my proof. The other standard is 8.G.7 is to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to my work to determine sides with no value given. This was for right triangles in mathematical situations with 2D or 3D objects. Well in my Mystery Project I used right triangles from the towers to the murdered body to find out missing lengths while applying the formula. Once I had all the different lengths for all the sides of all the three triangles, I looked for the one that matched my given information.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
In this assignment I did a drawing. I had to know how to preform my project and get it assembled. Once I had got down the information of the height of the buildings I needed to apply the formula I gave in the question above. At times I didn't have all the information so having my square roots memorized helped me out. It helped me find the missing lengths of the sides. I used the formula shown above several times for trial and error. I asked several questions to my peers also about the things that I didn't understand.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I have the ability of imputing data onto a report to conclude a legitimate answer for a problem. It also shows that I know how to use tools given to me. I used the formula to find the missing lengths of the sides of the triangles I was working with and wrote down my information on a separate sheet of paper. From the separate sheet of paper I went on and used my data collected as back up information to show where the murderer was and who he was. The murder was Consuelo standing from the Trump Towers who had shot the man laying dead on the street below. Connecting perfectly the triangle with all the information I was given including some of the work I had to get myself.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
I could have been more focused on my assignment staying very aware of the time. This assignment was made in 2 days while I was in my Math period. The work I had gotten done could have been better if I were to be more descriptive. Just like a real detective would be as concluding the answer to this case. In order to improve this I have set down ways on how to avoid bad time management which are, for a start not sitting near people that I know I am going to be talking to. Second, I will write down the things I need to first get down in order to start the project on the right foot. In this case it would of been imputing the formula to all three triangles quickly. After that I have chosen to divide my work up into different sections so I can get things done well and efficiently. I plan to start using this in all my assignments for the future in this class and in my other classes for other projects.
5) How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I will apply the skills I learned in the future if I decide to go in and work for the police department. after doing this project I learned to see another form of how math is used in our daily lives and I also saw how police men use it. Now that I have learned this, I will be prepared for when I too have to fill out Police Reports in my job.
