RKMS Mission: "Rise Kohyang Middle School will develop students who embrace a spirit of community, a goal of service to others, and a desire for self betterment through a college education"
I, Jackeline Sagastume am just a 14 year old who could of been very blind like this world a few years ago. I believe that I have met Rise's mission and have now opened my eyes to see what this world can give and get. During the past 3 years here at Rise we have been taught to be advocates for ourselves, our school, and also advocates for our community. In 6th grade I was taught to be an advocate for myself and my literature teacher Ms. Kim helped up make a video about it. In this video I talked about being an advocate for change by changing myself first. Like Gandhi said, we have to be the change we want to see in ourselves. I said that I would improve my behavior in class. In 7th grade we were taught to be an advocate for our school.. In 7th grade our school went through several changes due to all of us changing and maturing at different speeds as well. To be an advocate for our school, there was a group of students that would help out students be heard when there was something that no one would want to take their voice into consideration for. I was a part of it for about two months then it stopped and school became a calmed place again. This year I have embraced my community by being a better example for people. This year I took part of an Environmental Club. We were the Environmental Squad. Very few 8th graders were a part of it at first but then others came to join. We went out to clean out the area around our school, K-Town, and even the beach. My community has given me so many life opportunities and I thought then, why not give back and beautify my community. And that was how it all started.
My teachers have also done so much for me and lately I have been also giving back my thanks by helping them take down their things from their classrooms for the summer since school is already ending. It saves them time that they don't have and it is a way for them to get things done faster. While I am taking things down and cleaning they are finishing work that they need to get done for their other materials that they teach or different lessons they still need to teach. As time has passed by I feel like I am becoming better prepared for college because I am learning different cheats that are useful for the world. My brain is also seeing the ways life works and all of this is important because you wont be blind as you keep on flying higher educationally.

R- Reciprocate Give back
I- Initiate & Innovate Change starts with you S- Steward Be an advocate for change E- Elevate through Education |
Through out my years here at Rise I feel like now I have completely fulfilled the RKMS Vision. I learned and put to work what I learned about giving back to people, or a group of people. I learned that if I wanted to be an advocate, I had to start by changing myself. If i wanted to tell someone to stop being racist for example, but what if I was racist too, I would fall under the category of being hypocritical. If I wanted to tell them with all authority I would have to fix myself first. I have learned how to use my knowledge from the education I received into creating new ideas that get people thinking. Just like how Nissan's car commercials say, "Innovation that Excites". Ideas like these start new things. You initiate a new path of a better world. You elevate to new heights. These are things that I feel like I have learned & started to put in use these things and hopefully it pays off. It only takes one person to start a change.
