Thurgood Marshall: |
Thurgood Marshall was born July 2, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the grandson of a slave. His father William Marshall was a railroad porter & his mother Norma was a teacher. Thurgood Marshall was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He served as an AJUSSC from October 1967 - October 1991. He was the first African American to become an AJUSSC. Marshall even got an award for how he was an advocacy. The awards he received were the Presidential Award of Freedom & the Springarn Medal.
Thurgood Marshall was an advocacy in the civil rights movement. Advocacy means the act of pleading for, supporting, or recommending. In this case it would mean the act of supporting the Civil Rights Movement. Like marcher Luther king & Rosa Parks (who were also advocates), he stood up for all the African Americans. He showed the United States that an African American can also be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Like I mentioned in his biography in the paragraph above, he won the Presidential Award of Freedom & the Springarn Medal because he was an advocacy.
I could apply this in my life because I know I can be an advocate. I want to stand up for what I believe in too just like Thurgood Marshall. Currently right now I have seen in the news that more people have been deported the years Obama has served as president than other years. I know there are many different people from all races who have families that they have to leave because their "illegal" & I believe that is unfair. I know that the Ice Department are only doing their jobs but aren't we all illegal? This land actually belongs to the Native Americans but all the different people from different places tricked them into giving them the land. What I want to do is to start off with a group in my community that believe we should stop deporting family members because sometimes they deport immigrants who don't even have criminal records, in other words, sometimes they have a clean record but they still get deported! Everyday there are many families who suffer because a family member got deported. Children cry & when both parents are immigrants, the legal children are sent to foster families if there is no one who can be responsible for them. I know that if I try, I can make this wish true. Maybe I may not be able to stop deportations for ever, but I know that at least I can stop deportations for people who have clean records. All I need to do is have faith in myself & gather a group of people who want to take a stand or that want to support this idea. Then from there, destiny will lead the way.
