Culminating Writing Piece
In this assignment, you will be paralleling one of the novels that we have read this year to a current day societal issue. You will write a three paragraph essay connecting a novel that we have read in class to an article, and your own life.
I will provide three different articles that you can use for your written piece. You may also find a different article of your choice with teacher approval. You must type up your response and print it out and put it on your digital portfolio by June 1. All students MUST present in class and this is what I will be signing off for your ELA portion of the digital portfolio checklist for SLCs.

What current day societal issue does the article/novel address?
Education rights
Summarize the main points of the article in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
Claudia Morales is a 13 year old daughter of a Farm Working family. She moves twice a year to different labour camps. She moves because her parents work on seasonal farms. Life is hard for her & her studies. In the article it says, "Claudia gets straight A's at one school, somewhat lower grades at her other." Panchito failed his classes several times according to the novel. However he didn’t feel like he belonged because he did not know english as well as the other kids. He felt left out from the others due to that. Pancito also spent most of his time working with his parents or on his own however eventually he made it into collage.
Compare how the article and the novel address the societal issue in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
"A state lawmaker this year tried to change the 50-mile rule, but the bill dies in committee." It says in the article. Claudia was & is not the only child who suffers from lack of education rights. "Eventually, about 90 percent of kids living in seasonal worker housing drop out of school..." another part of the article read. However it should change because all children will mark the future. In Breaking Through Panchito lost hope at one point but when his counselor took the students to Cal Poly, he actually started thinking & dreaming to get into college. He would work hard at school everyday yet manage to work in the nights. His counselor would help him apply for colleges as well. In the article I read, Claudia Morales felt left out. In one school she would do good because she has been there since the beginning of the school year but once in the other school, she feels lost. The methods of teaching are different & they would be learning a different thing.
How does this issue relate to your own life (4-5 sentences)?
This relates to my own life because, when I was little I used to have to move a lot. I once lived in Huntington Park for the beginning of the year then moved to Fresno for the last half of the year. It went on like that for about 2 years then we changed directions. It was from Rancho Cucamonga to San Francisco for another 2 years. Thankfully, once I started school, we stopped moving because my father had found a stable job where they would not ask him or care if he was undocumented or not. But even though we had found a stable place to stay, we had t move again because the ICE department tried catching my family so we eventually moved & that is where I can relate with Claudia. Once I moved it was hard for me to understand what they were learning. I knew no one in Los Angeles but I liked it here. Eventually this is where we have settle down for over 6 years. I would move because my parents never really had a stable work place for a long time due to them being immigrants. I sometimes felt like all my life we were going to keep on moving but thankfully we stopped.
